Ch. 7 - Types of Crystals and Stones

Crystals and stones come in many different shapes, colors, sizes and types.  The following information provides descriptions of different types of rocks, crystals and stones you may find.

Acicular –  An aggregate of long, thin crystals that are needle-shaped and form a net-like growth.  An example of acicular crystal is Natrolite, belonging to the Zeolite family of minerals.

Aggregate -  Grouping of crystals of one or more mineral types which are clustered in a dense mass.  Agate is a good example; as is Puddingstone and Granite.

Arborescent -  Cluster bearing structural resemblance to the branching qualities of trees. Gold and Silver are good examples.

Bladed -  Flat crystals shaped like blades of grass or knives.  Kyanite is an excellent example of bladed crystallization.

Blocky – Crystals that have a boxy appearance with flat sides.  Selenite sometimes has this crystallization habit.

Cubic --  Crystals that have a point on each corner, forming a cube.

Dendritic – Crystals that contain inclusions that resemble plant like patterns.

Dodecahedron --  A crystal that has ten faces.

Double Terminated Crystals – Crystals that have balance with points at each end. Some are self-healed double terms and some are formed this way in nature.  Herkimer Diamonds and Tibetan Quartz are good examples.

Druse -  Outwardly oriented crystals that look like the inside of a geode.  Amethyst and Quartz crystal are good examples.

Equant -   rounded, angular crystals with three nearly equal perpendicular axis.  Fluorite is an excellent example.

Fibrous -  An aggregate of fine, typically parallel, thin, thread-like crystals.

Fracture – Refers to the appearance of a newly chipped, or broken surface forming an uneven face.  Quartz often contains fractures.

Geode -  Outer shell of one mineral that encases a layer comprised of a different mineral.  Example:  Amethyst cathedral within an aggregate shell.   Volcanic in origin.

Hexagonal --- A crystal that has six faces.

Octahedron – A crystal that has eight faces.  Fluorite is a good example.

Opaque -  Solid coloration of crystal, usually white or light gray in which light does not penetrate.

Orthorhombic --  Crystal with a double pyramid shape that forms a rhombic prism.

Phantomed -  Crystals that stop growing for a while, then resume growth forming smaller crystals within that are ‘trapped’. The phantom has the shape of the crystal of when it stopped growing.

Sceptered -  Crystals that stop growing for a period of time, then resume growth but only on the upper part, not the lower portion.

Tabular -  Crystals, also referred to as ‘Tabbies’ that are thick and flat, sometimes with opposing side being wider than the other.

Tetrahedron – The tetrahedron is one kind of pyramid which is a polyhedron with a flat polygon base and triangular faces connecting the base to a common point.
